Dera Jaat Canal

Derajaat Area Water Board is covering Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur districts which are situated in south of Punjab. The range of Sulemanki Mountains is also situated in these districts which is the base of Pakistan’s second largest mountainous irrigation system generally called “Rod Kohi” System. Rod Kohies are the natural water channels which provide water during rain falls and the local farming community has been using this water for agricultural, livestock and drinking purposes for centuries.

The river Indus also flows through the lands of these districts and has been helpful in maintaining agriculture. In accordance to the climate of the area, sorghum, gram, bajra, wheat and oilseed are normally cultivated which in turn contribute a lot to improve the economic conditions of the farming community.

Before the establishment of AWB, PIDA framed 30 Farmer Organizations on the distributaries of Chashma Right Bank Canal in Taunsa Canal Division. Earlier, people of the area have been using “Rod Kohis” water to irrigate their lands which was not a scientific way of irrigation. At present, PIDA has established 120 FOs which have been imparted irrigation management. Similarly, the Dera Jaat Area Water Board is also operational.
